7-00pm Layer de la Haye School Leavers' Service at St John the Baptist

Sunday, 22nd July 2018 MARY MAGDALENE

Services in the Layer parishes will be at the normal times and places,
as published on the Services except that:

There will be NO EVENING SERVICE at St John the Baptist, Layer de la Haye.
An alternative option is:
6-00pm Evensong at St Mary the Virgin, EASTHORPE

Sunday, 29th July 2018 NINTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY (fifth Sunday in the month)

9-30am Five Parishes Holy Communion at St Mary the Virgin, LAYER MARNEY.

This service will be a 'Lammas' celebration. So what is Lammas? Lammas or ‘Loaf-mass’ is a traditional celebration that marks the first harvest of the season. Held around the beginning of August, it is a thanksgiving for these first-fruits. In the service, a loaf made with grains from the wheat harvest is presented and part of this loaf will be used as the bread in Holy Communion.

PLEASE NOTE that on this Sunday there will be NO services at our other four churches,
Layer de la Haye, Layer Breton, Copford or Easthorpe.

6-00pm Team 'Songs of Praise' at All Saints, Messing.
Please note that there will be NO Evening Prayer service at Layer de la Haye.

Wednesday, 1st August 2018

10-00am to 11-30am Birch & Layer Breton 'Pop Up' Coffee Shop
at St Mary's Church, Layer Breton Heath

Proper coffee, tea and delicious cakes. Pop in and enjoy this informal social get-together which is held on the first Wednesday of each month. For more information telephone 331898.

12 Noon Men's Monthly Pub Lunch at the Fox, Layer de la Haye

It's simple, totally informal, no strings and we each pay for our own order. By the Sunday before the lunch please contact Jon Smith (email Jon or call him on 07814-116-590) to let him know if you're coming as we pre-order our food at the Fox.

We're a friendly bunch of men from Layer de la Haye and nearby villages. Around 14 of us attend the lunches - and newcomers are always welcome. Over an hour or so we have some drinks, a lunch and a chat - pub, drink, food, good company - a no brainer really! Our lunches are at 12 noon on the 1st Wednesday of each month. In odd numbered months we meet at the Donkey & Buskins and in even numbered months we meet at the Fox.

Sundays - 5th, 12th, 19th, and 26th August 2018

2-00pm to 5-00pm Layer de la Haye Church Tower Open to Visitors.

Layer de la Haye Church Tower will again be open on Sunday afternoons in August. See the historic bells and enjoy the fine views over Abberton Reservoir from the tower roof.

It is well worth the effort to climb to the top of the tower. Our team of helpers will be on hand to ensure your safety on the way up - and down again! On the way up you will be able to see the steel bell-frame which houses our six bells, and the original wooden mediaeval bell frame which it replaced.

At busy times you may have to wait a short while before being allowed into the tower. There is very limited space up in the tower and there may be a need to let earlier visitors come down so that there is room for you to go up!

We regret that access to the roof (via three small fixed ladders) is restricted and not suitable for the disabled. Visitors are advised to avoid wearing high heels or skirts.

Visitors will be treated to our customary warm welcome and light refreshment will be available.

There will be a charge of £3 per adult. All money raised will be used for the upkeep of the church, so if you can donate a bit more than the £3 per adult then that would be much appreciated. There will be no charge for children under age 16 but they must be supervised by an adult at all times.
